BACKGROUND:
Kanto had never known life before the fall out, born nearly two years after that tragic event. While it wasn't to say that life was easy, or necessarily pleasant, his suffering was minimal for the first few years of his life. Raised by his mother and her brother, his father having passed away shortly after conception, he appeared to the naked eye a perfectly normal, healthy baby boy. A bit chubby perhaps, but who was his mother to complain? Two inky black eyes, a nose, a mouth, and no extra appendages where they ought not to be were more than she could ask for. Only the screening said otherwise, that while no great mutation had take place on the surface his body itself was a ticking time bomb; when it would go off, only time could tell. As many as ten years went by without incident, and young Kanto lived well enough.

They supposed it was triggered by the initial stirrings of puberty, the first signs of his illness coming by way of a dry cough. Thought to be a simple cold at first, it was made clear enough as it lingered for weeks and worsened by every handful of days that it was something far more serious. Brought to the doctor, they confirmed that it was indeed a product of radiation and would very likely lead to fatal results if left untreated. Once a week he was to take a capsule of LFT from that point on for the rest of his life, never curing, but at the very least slowing the progression of his disease. Irreparable damage to his lungs had already been done, and for that he held trusty his inhaler. Heavily dependent upon it during moments when he became short of breath (most commonly in suddenly temperature changes from hot to cold or otherwise, and extensive strenuous activity), he never left home without it. Still, he supposed, he'd lucked out in the grand scheme of things.

He wondered if it wasn't the idea of death looming overhead, but after that time he'd become a more troublesome boy, more restless, more eager to do so much more than school. Come the age of fifteen he wanted nothing more to do with it and took up an apprenticeship as a handyman, studying beneath a hardened man old enough to likely be his grandfather. While not an especially nice man, he wasn't especially mean either save for when Kanto very likely deserved it for goofing off. A swat about the head, a firm knock, but never more than was really necessary to keep him in line. He spent many days after work was through exploring the dome, from edge to edge and everything in between, a wanderlust hardly sated by their small, enclosed living space. Much as reason told him otherwise, he longed to explore further, to learn more of the world outside.
